Why Do Extra Spaces Disappear on Instagram and Websites?
HTML and most social apps (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and many forums) collapse several regular spaces into a single space. That is why double spacing you type on your phone often disappears after posting.
To keep the spacing, set Space character to Non-breaking space (U+00A0), En space or Em space. These Unicode characters look like normal spaces but are not collapsed, so the gap you see in the result is the gap your readers will see.
One Space or Two After a Period?
Two spaces after a period comes from typewriters, which used monospaced fonts: the extra space made the end of each sentence easier to spot. Modern proportional fonts handle that automatically, so today's major style guides (APA 7th edition, Chicago, MLA, AP) recommend a single space. APA 6th edition recommended two, and some teachers, legal offices and plain-text or monospace documents still require two. Use After sentences mode to add them consistently. Double Spacing for Essays (MLA, APA)
Academic styles such as MLA and APA require double line spacing throughout a paper. In Microsoft Word or Google Docs this is a formatting setting (Line spacing → Double). For plain-text places like emails, forums, code comments or online submission boxes, use Between lines mode to add a real blank line after every line.
